Ian McKellen, known to X-Men fans as Magento and everyone else as that posh wizard from Lord of the Rings, let the cat out of the bag on the Jonathon Ross Show by announcing that he plans to marry his X-Men co-star Patrick Stewart. Well, you know what we mean.
"I'm going to marry Patrick. I am going to officiate at his wedding." Stewart, 72 plans to marry his girlfriend of four years, jazz singer, Sunny Ozell, 35.
Ross asked McKellen, 73, what his qualifications were as wedding celebrant or equivalent, to which McKellen replied:
“I don’t know,” McKellen said. “But in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married. … I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership. I was crying my eyes out.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Massachusetts' Secretary of Commonwealth offers a service that allows a family friend or relative to perform a couple's wedding ceremony for a one-time fee of $25.
Asked what he might wear to the ceremony, McKellen replied that the last time he officiated, he wore "a white gown which I bought in India. You mustn’t upstage the bride.”
Wise words, Gandalf.
Stewart and McKellen will reprise their X-Men roles in flashback scenes in the upcoming prequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
