Here's what we said about Spongie then: "He's looking downward now but Sponge Bob has already lost two kilograms so his health is on the up!"

It was only two months ago that Sponge Bob came to our attention as the beloved Tabby who was put in a shelter after his owner was put in a nursing home. The prognosis appeared to be good: he was losing weight and loving life.

Sadly, we spoke too soon.

People.com reports that Sponge Bob passed away a week ago. He was only 9 years old. Worse, he’d only just started really living – he’d been adpoted by New York City couple Courtney and Matt Farrell.

His untimely death reportedly began with a coughing fit. The Farrells checked him into the vet, (points to the Farrells - many people could've easily dismissed the coughing as a fur ball). An X-ray revealed a mass on Spongie's chest that quickly put pressure on his heart and lungs, restricting his breathing. The Farrells then had to make the heartbreaking decision to put Spongie to sleep.

"This has been one of the hardest things I have ever experienced, and certainly the most difficult thing Matt and I have had to endure as a couple," Courtney wrote on her blog.

"We loved this cat so tremendously and had so many plans for him as part of our family. We hadn't had him for long, but we had already dreamed about him being around in the future."

Oh! How saddening! Let’s wrap this up on an upbeat note by remembering that Spongie’s weight seemed to only add to his cuteness and never touched his handsome face.
