Raising boys that feminists hate

Imagine if Alan Jones and an AK-47 assault rifle teamed up to write a parenting manual about raising boys.

Nope, can’t do it? Then get yourself to Amazon and have a read of Doug Giles’ recently published Raising Boys Feminists Will Hate.

Giles’ thesis is as novel as it is dumb. According to Giles, modern parenting has been hijacked by a bunch of men-hating lesbians.

These evil non-male beings — also known as ‘women’ — are hell-bent on turning your sons into well-rounded social beings. Or, as Giles scathingly calls them, ‘nice, placid cooperators’.

Giles bases his ideas on the Bible. No doubt this is in the vain hope that anyone who isn’t immediately convinced by his nonsense will come around if they’re told it has the endorsement of the MAN upstairs.

According to Giles, "God’s initial earth boy was born to dominate creation and to exercise authority over the planet". He implores parents to nurture their  ‘natural born leader who will naturally want to control’.

If all our boys are raised to dominate and control, who then is left to be dominated and controlled? Oh yes, that’s right, women.  Or, more specifically, as Giles writes, "The feminists and the men who have yielded up their private parts to the lesbians, I mean feminists, [who] have an organized system of male hatred that they just can’t wait to slap your son with."

The trouble for Giles and other conservatives who bleat about feminism threatening the natural order of things, is that they embody everything they rail against.

On the one hand they’re constantly banging on about how men are natural born leaders. Then they go and ruin the whole warrior thing by whining about how they’re the victims of a vast cultural conspiracy run by women.

You can’t have it both ways. Either God/nature ordained that you’re a ruler, or he didn’t. And if your supposedly divinely-ordained grip on power is coming undone by ‘handbag hitsquads’, ‘joint destroyers’ and the arguments of rational people, then perhaps it’s time to admit that you were mistaken.

Although, of course, Giles would reply that this is just another myth perpetrated by the popular media. The media, it turns out, are central players in this whole men-hating racket.

"The clear message that comes from popular culture," writes Doug, "is that masculinity sucks, and femininity is fabulous, even for men. Men who would be men are getting pounded in pop culture and everyone is expected to be cool with it."

Doug obviously isn’t familiar with Rocky I, II, III, IV, V and Rocky Balboa; First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III, and Rambo; Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Die Hard With a Vengeance; all the Dirty Harry films; and pretty much every Hollywood blockbuster ever produced.

But then again, Doug’s not one for movies. They’re for sissies. According to his website, Doug’s interests include "guns, big game hunting, big game fishing, fine art, cigars, helping wounded warriors, and being a big pain in the butt to people who dislike God and the USA".

If you long for a world where men are men, Jesus is a Hummer-driving redneck, large animals know how to stand still in front of a gun sight, and women just shut the f*#k up, then this is the parenting manual for you.

  • Rather than dislike people such as Giles, I feel sorry for them. Giles' sick and twisted view of the world speaks volumes about his own inadequacies as a man/human being.

    • The thing is he probably feels sorry for the way you live, even without knowing how you live. People are mainly a product of their environment and it's hard to change that.

    • That sounds less like "raising boys that feminists hate", and more like "raising boys who will audition for musical theatre with the feminists", if my experience with dudes raised in hyper-conservative households holds true for others.

By all means, they can go ahead and do that. God knows I was raised in a super-traditional family with rigid gender roles and I'm as far to the left as they come now. But kids are generally smart enough to know when they're fed BS and can see through the lies of parents who are miserable as buggery from a life devoted to mindlessly choosing gender roles over genuine merit, talent, achievement or goodness.

    • Be fair! He also wrote Raising Righteous and Rowdy Girls "for raising girls with a fighting spirit, discernment, a winning attitude, and a holy vision to overcome this feces filled culture." He may be a gun-toting redneck with God allegedly on his side, but it seems he wants to "teach your daughters to fight, shoot guns, sense BS, be classy, despise anti-intellectualism, be visionaries, party without going Britney, the value hunting and the outdoors, the importance of traditional convictions, and how to avoid the date from hell."
I haven't read it, but that sounds fairly empowering to me. Please review this one too, in the name of fairness.

      • Balanced Female, believe me, despite the blurb saying it will raise girls who 'despise anti-intellectualism', Doug Giles and his ilk are vehemently restrictive on what is 'acceptable' knowledge. Looking at the reviews of that book, he's also arrogant and racist and spends much of his time insulting those whose politics he disagrees with.

      • Balanced Female, does girls' power come before we are being controlled and dominated by men or after? Please enlighten me! It will help me to better understand how to raise my son and daughter.

      • Doesn't sound very empowering to me. Apart from teaching them to fight and shoot (um...yay??), he wants them to learn to 'be classy' (act like a perfect little lady), 'party without going Britney' (dress modestly, not like a slut), 'the importance of traditional convictions' (your job is to marry a bloke, submit to his will no matter how stupid or vicious or mean he might be, have children, raise them as Christians and never, ever, ever contemplate abortion or coming out as a lesbian) and 'how to avoid the date from hell' (don't put out until there's a ring on your finger). Yawn. Same old, same old.
Boys and girls are different. Yes, they are. But many of the behaviours you think are 'hardwired into their genes' are the product of their upbringing in our very sexually segregaged society. Emphasising the differences between young boys and young girls, based on their different genitalia, disadvantages both girls AND boys. I believe that this emphasis is the reason why boys are not doing as well academically as girls right up until school leaving level.
It's not about trying to turn boys into girls or vice versa, just about maximising the potential for happiness and productivity for BOTH sexes.

    • This guy sounds like a tosser. But he is completely right about the persecution of masculinity. You did well to mention several action films with competant male leads, and what do they all have in common? They're considered dumb and buff-head orientated. Just like anything that celebrates manly men.
