Most of us won’t think twice before delving into the (oft painfully expensive) task of updating our summer wardrobe. But when it comes to giving our home a seasonal makeover, there’s often a slight reluctance in getting past the point of stowing away our winter doona.
The idea of attempting an interior update can be strangely intimating. For one thing, an overhaul at home can feel like an enormous project that we simply don’t have the time or Grand Design-y expertise for. The jaw-dropping ‘before and after’ shots on home blogs like Kitchn and Apartment Therapy don’t tend to help either – not least because the thought of investing in a new fancy couch or a block colour feature wall “just to welcome summer” can seem too far out of reach.
But just because major makeovers can be off-puttingly elaborate doesn’t mean we can’t have any fun. In home style as in fashion, sometimes it makes more sense to experiment with clever accessories than reinventing a staple look.
Incorporating bright homewares into your living space can be a great way of lifting the mood of a room instantly. The good news is, with so many niche brands and department stores now selling online, it’s so easy to shop for your summer-inspired goodies without having to break a sweat.
For the budget (and style) conscious, try bringing pops of colour into your kitchen by putting bright glass tumblers or patterned water pitchers on display. Apart from being functional, these statement pieces are likely to impress the guests at all the dinner parties you’ll be hosting this summer.
And since accessories are far more sensible than ‘investment pieces’, this means, as we all know, that there’s a better chance of taking home more pretty items – and none of the buyer’s guilt.
