When Patrick Stewart tweeted this message of support to Ellen Page after she announced that she was gay, naturally it was assumed that Stewart must indeed be gay too.
Well, according to The Guardian UK, anyway. In an article entitled 'Three cheers for Ellen Page -- but coming out should not be such big news,' reporter Jane Czyzselska mistakenly identified Stewart as gay, before the news outlet issued the following correction:
This article was amended on 17 February 2014. The third paragraph originally said 'Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy'. This should have read 'Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy'.
Stewart is, in fact, happily married to Sunny Ozell.
After the Poynter Institute pointed out The Guardian's gaffe, Stewart weighed in.
One Twitter pointed out that perhaps The Guardian confused Stewart's relationship with his BFF Sir Ian McKellen, who is gay, to which Stewart replied:
Things could have been worse for the X-Men star, though.
Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change...at least I didn't wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again.— Patrick Stewart (@SirPatStew) February 18, 2014
Three cheers for Patrick Stewart!
