Maybe it's because the song, Here With Me, from The Killers has such a big, booming mid '90s rock sound, somewhere between the GooGoo Dolls and Bon Jovi's later ballads, but the video, directed by Tim Burton and starring Winona Ryder as the object of a creepy boy's affection, is very mid 90s in flavour. Check out the 'carnivale' theme, the Gothic sensibility, the whole 'singing-from-an-abandoned-stage' deal. It's like we all died and woke up in our Poppy matte lipstick at 8am on Saturday morning just in time for Rage.
We digress. Burton explained his vision - of a mannequin Winona who comes to life - in a note on the band's website "The first time I saw The Killers perform live was in Blackpool, UK shortly after completing work on our first collaboration, the music video for Bones," the director wrote. "When I heard the song Here With Me I remembered seeing a wax figure of Winona in Louis Tussaud’s Waxworks in Blackpool. The concept of the video is inspired by the 1935 film Mad Love, starring Peter Lorre, as well as the works of Mario Bava."
Also, Burton really loves to put Winona in a blonde wig.
