Are zombies past their prime yet? By the look of the official trailer for the zombie-apocalypse epic World War Z, not even close.
The trailer (available at 1080p resolution on iTunes) includes the standard start-with-innocuous-yet-apt-moment-then-escalate-rapidly formula that’s become pretty standard for action movies, but it’s noteworthy for showing zombie hordes like we’ve never seen them. At a couple of points in the trailer, the zombies rapidly climb over each other, almost becoming an “appendage” of the horde. That’s new.
The movie is of course based on the Max Brooks book of the same title. While the book focuses the military response to the zombie hordes coming out of New York, the trailer shows the primary location as Philadelphia.
Also settled: What kind of zombies the movie will depict. These are fast zombies, capable of running and feats of strength similar to the monsters in 28 Days Later and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, not the shambling “walkers” that are the staple of George Romero’s classic zombie films or the current TV series The Walking Dead.
We love zombie action as much as the next ghoul, but this trailer is a tad too heavy on the spoilers (it’s clear that the family of Pitt’s protagonist survives). Still, all kinds of awesome. We’re in for a long wait for it, though — it’s not coming out until June 13, 2013 in the US.
