Thanks to the universal taboo around periods, pretty much every woman has had the fear visible leakage instilled in her from a young age. The idea of your entire sanitary pad flying out - not just in public - but during a performance on live TV? That's the stuff of nightmares.

And it's exactly what happened to 42-year-old Mexican singer Patricia Navidad this week, while performing a song on the Univision show Despierta América (Wake Up America). But instead of succumbing to the nightmare, she dealt with it like an absolute boss. Girls, women: take note. This is how you pwn the period-shaming bullies.

First up: Navidad must be commended for coolly shrugging off her pad malfunction and finishing the song without batting an eyelid.

But being a total professional about it didn't stop guys on social media trying to make jokes at her expense. Rather than ignore them though, Navidad took to Twitter armed with her own fierce sense of humour to throw it all back in their faces and turn an embarrassing moment into a triumph.

(Translated with assistance from BuzzFeed):

"They say that a man who treats the woman as a princess has been educated by a queen; those who harass and offend, who homeschooled them?"

"Too bad all the men that are making fun of this weren't there, because if it is what they say it was I would've loved to have smeared it on their face."

"I DONT NEED WINGS TO FLY, I HAVE IMAGINATION AND THANK GOD I HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR."

Finally, in response to a meme that some douchecanoes made accusing her of "throwing the towel" (the Spanish word for pad is the same as towel):

"I'M NOT A BOXER, I'M A WARRIOR, AND I NEVER THROW IN THE TOWEL, UNLESS I DON'T NEED IT ANYMORE".

Go Paty!

Gracias por su cariño y apoyo incondicional, los quiero mucho!!! ❤️😘
