SBS launches 'Zela', a new site for women's sport coverage

Women's sport in Australia has been crossing some major milestones in recent months. From the Matildas' World Cup success (and subsequent high profile pay dispute) to Michelle Payne's Melbourne Cup win and the awesome ratings success of the Women's Big Bash League; Aussie sportswomen are showing that they have what it takes to not just succeed on the world stage but to get audiences excited. 

And they're doing it despite woeful pay and a persistent lack of support - both from the sporting codes and the media that covers them. 

But things are changing; and with audiences' appetite for women's sport contantly growing, SBS has launched 'Zela', a new page specifically dedicated to its coverage of women's sport.

Introducing the page, SBS sports reporter Lucy Zelic said it was a "no brainer" to develop a site specifically for celebrating and discussing women's sport. And importantly, a site where women can consume sport coverage and engage in discussions about sport in the knowledge that they won't be trolled, belittled or sidelined.

​"It's a place where you are free to express your opinions, where the courage of your conviction is applauded not reprimanded and where you can be yourself with the hopes that one day, the world too, can share our views."

Of course, in some ways it is depressing that the endemic sexism across just about every sport means women need a safe space in which to consume and discuss it. But hopefully in providing that space, SBS might lead more media outlets to truly begin taking women's sport - and female sports fans - seriously.
