It's the kind of obnoxious catcall that gets thrown around a lot at live gigs, especially at female musicians - some drunken dude will pipe up in the middle of a setlist silent break with a desperate "Marry me!".
Well, Lauren Mayberry, rad lead singer of Scottish synth-poppers Chvrches, isn't the kind to just let that go, as she showed at a gig in New York's Central Park this weekend.
The musician - who's regularly spoken out on music industry sexism and the harassment she's received from internet trolls, including just last month when online commenters noted that her wet hair in the band's new video made her look like a "slut" - awesomely hit back at the heckler, leading to cheers galore from the crowd.
"Oh, come on. What's the hit rate on that? When you go to public places and ask women you don't know if they want to wed you, does that work out well for you, sir?", she told the heckler, adding "I assume because you're here that you'd know a bit about our band. And I'm very grumpy. I don't want that shit."
"Sorry for shaming that one person," she apologised to the rest of the well-behaved crowd, "but if nobody tells you you're never gonna know."
When another audience member asked her why she was "so grumpy", Mayberry gave him a well-deserved middle finger as the band burst into their new song, 'Playing Dead'.
The band will be touring Australia as part of the Laneway Festival in February next year. Dudes, don't try it.
