Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard was left embarrassed last night after an on-court presenter asked her to "twirl" following her 2nd Round win at the Australian Open.
The 20-year-old had just defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-3 6-0 at Margaret Court Arena, when the male presenter made the strange request during the post-game interview.
"Last night, you tweeted that you loved Serena's (Williams) outfit; obviously the fluoro is working for you girls at the moment," the interviewer said. "She was kind enough to give us a twirl. Can you give us a twirl and tell us about your outfit?"
"A twirl?", Bouchard - a semi-finalist at last year's Aus Open and the Number 7 seed at this year's tournament - replied, somewhat confused.
"A twirl, like a pirouette, here you go," the interviewer continued.
Embarrassed, the tennis player spun around, then covered her face with her hands and laughed.
At the post-game press conference, Bouchard was asked about the incident.
"It was very unexpected," she said. "I don't know, an old guy asking you to twirl. It was funny."
I guess Ask Eugenie Bouchard Something Ridiculous Day is now an annual thing at the #AustralianOpen http://t.co/OGlRXwoBDk — Erika Gilbert (@e_gilbert) January 21, 2015
Bouchard - who is currently ranked 7 in the world, following her appearance in last year's Wimbledon final - is regularly described as "the new golden girl of tennis". A similar, widely criticised incident at last year's Australian Open saw her being asked 'which celebrity she'd like to date' following her upset three-set win over Ana Ivanovic that put her into the tournament's semi-final.
