There was a lot happening at the premiere of Gangster Squad last night in Los Angeles. As well as the presence of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling himself in a caramel suit complete with studded shoes, Gosling's mother turned up as his date wearing ... his girlfriend's clothes.
“I’m wearing Eva Mendes,” Donna told E! News, as she walked the red carpet with her 32-year-old son. “She let me raid her closet.”
Gosling confirmed that his girlfriend loaned his mother some of her designer clothes, adding: “My mother’s wearing all my girlfriend’s clothes."
Ryan Gosling and mom Donna arrive at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Gangster Squad' at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on January 7.
Well, nothing says 'I'm in' quite like your boyfriend's mother borrowing your clothes. So, kudos, Eva! Then again, what does it say about Eva, who turns 39 in March, that a 50-something woman looks not at all inappropriate wearing her clothes?
And speaking of inappropriate, can we get a little judgy for a minute here? Okay, great, because Ryan has often spoken of his close relationship with his mother - he chose to live with her after his parent's divorce and credits his mother with the fact that he 'thinks like a girl'. We don't want to freak you out or anything but Gosling was also home-schooled by his mother.
In fact, it's probably because of his relationship with his mother that he goes for slightly older ladies like Sandra Bullock and Eva. But there is a difference between being really close to mom and inviting her to try on your girlfriend's clothes. No matter which way you slice it, that's a deeply symbolic move on everyone's part. Especially as Donna is her son's date. It's not like Donna couldn't have called up a designer at a moment's notice to get herself a frock. She is Ryan Gosling's mother! She'd have that frock in a flash. And so we have a few options, none of them functional.
1.This is Ryan's way of reassuring his mother that she can never be replaced. But then we have to ask, why would he need to reassure her?
2.This is Donna's way of inserting herself into her son's relationship. Superficially she's letting Ryan, Eva and the world know she approves, but by wearing Eva's clothes she's also saying she can replace Eva. She's telling everyone that if she can wear Eva's clothes, there really is very little difference between Donna and Eva.
3.This is Eva's way of playing along with what a therapist might call a distinct lack of boundaries. A cynical person would call it covert incest - relax, if you go to the link you'll see it's not as creepy as it sounds. Although it's not great. The main take-out from this is that Eva knows how to play ball, ie. she knows the rules of Ryan's relationship with his mother and she is willing to roll with them. Which means in Ryan's eyes at least, she's a keeper.
