Ryan Gosling has cast his girlfriend of 18 months, Eva Mendes in his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster. The film, which also stars Ben Mendelsohn and Christina Hendricks, is a fantasy thriller about a boy who battles dark forces in an underwater town. And we are not even joking. According to reports Mendes will play "Cat," described as a prominent member of the Big Bad Wolf Club… but nobody knows what the hell that means beyond the fairy tale reference. The casting of Mendes raises other questions beyond the obvious 'Linda McCartney-joined-Wings-and-all-because-Paul-couldn't-stand-to-be-away-from-her-for-five-minutes' ones.
Casting this late in the development of the script kinda points to making it up as you go along. And that's never a good sign. Also, casting your girlfriend, who is admittedly, hot as balls but not really known for blockbusters, could also point to the notion that not many other ladies were interested.
Look, can we indulge in some real talk here? We don't want to piddle all over The Gos's creative buzz but this is starting to sound faintly ridiculous. Don't get us wrong, we love The Gos like, well, a lover, but we're afraid that directing might not be his forte.
That said, Linda McCartney doing precious little other than banging on a tambourine for Wings never did Paul any harm. So, in closing, we'd like to quote from a well-known Wings hit:
"When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say live and let live..."
And, um, we'll just leave it there.
