You know when you make up a catch cry that you really want to catch on, so you say it all the time. Like "fetch" in Mean Girls, or like that guy in high school who tried to make up his own nickname.

Well, in the the past month I have had an epiphany and it is one that I have been screeching about to anybody that will listen. The epiphany is thus, "florals are the new neutral!" Because, as a former all-black devotee, I recently purchased a silk, floral suit and to my delight have discovered that it goes with absolutely everything. It is truly astonishing.

The printed trouser was big in the eighties, and from my observations of those in the front row and on the catwalk at fashion week earlier this month, the silk digital printed trouser is not going anywhwere in a hurry.

The best thing about wearing them - apart from the certain joy that they bring - is that you can opt to clash prints by wearing stripes, or spots up top. Alternatively, you can tone down the trousers with a good quality t.shirt or shirt and a classic blazer.

I think they work best with heels - be they a pump or platform heel. Look to Olivia Palermo with her leopard print heels and floral trousers and remember that they don't have to be black or beige.

Though flat sandals are the friend of floral trousers too, depending on the cut of your jibe.

On that, I prefer a more tailored floral trouser, but a peg-leg and even harem style work too. The important thing to remember is that florals are the new neutral. I'm going to make it stick.

What to buy this week: floral trousers, a decent t.shirt, flowers for a lady friend, a copy of Tina Fey's memoir Bossypants.
