What to buy: office parties

French Connection Sequin Skater Dress, $272.00, ASOS

November is a great time for list making: presents to buy, places to go and all the other usual early Christmas preparations that ensures sanity for the weeks that follow.

But holiday admin aside, November also heralds the start of the Office Party Season. With memories of awkward Halloween costumes still fresh on everyone’s minds, it can definitely feel too soon to be pushing sartorial boundaries.

Besides, as 'workplace experts’ always like to remind us, it’s still work no matter how many people are in mufti. So it’s really important to have a game plan before you start short-listing appropriate party frocks.

The ground rules for company party dos and don’ts are largely intuitive. Depending on your usual office dress-code, it’s likely that you’ll get a sense of how experimental you can go. Most companies won’t expect you to be ultra-conservative, but will probably prefer that you don’t turn up as your celebrity spirit animal. (Unless otherwise stated on the invitation, naturally.)

In terms of trends, bold colours and graphic prints are taking over the online catalogues. And while  the ubiquitous neon range still seems to be threatening every fashion lover’s way of life, you can always just update your look with statement accessories.

Finally, no matter what naysayers tell you, black will always be a popular party staple. ASOS has some great, affordable options, while the time (and resource) rich should browse through online offerings from US Department Stores like Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus. Otherwise, websites like Shopstyle and The Iconic are always excellent one stop shops for iconic local labels.
