Kelly Smythe,

Kelly Smythe.

Once a month celebrity stylist and Shopbop.com ambassador Kelly Smythe will breakdown the latest trends for Daily Life's readers. Here's a little introduction to this one heck of a stylish lady.

Can you give us a little background on your career so far? How did you get into fashion?

At a naive age of 19 I moved from my home country in New Zealand to follow my dreams. The eye for style is something you are born with. I spent the first part of my career in fashion retail, merchandising, door knocking and shooting endless test shoots (working for 3 years before I saw a dollar come from it). Eventually I was head hunted by the Seven network to oversee the entire image of the network as style director and managing 110 on air talent and 10 shows. I spent five wonderful years there working with industry heavy weights and learnt so much from the mentors that I had there, and still have to this day. I started my own company in 2008 and my first client was the gorgeous Jennifer Hawkins. I continued to expand my empire and KS styling team (without them I'm nothing!) and now we have an extensive brood of private and international/national celebrity clients

What do you love about working in the fashion industry?

The pace, my team, and the fact that no two days are the same!

What are the biggest changes that you have noticed in the fashion industry?

When I started in this game 16 years ago, stylists were few and far between! It was unheard of in my home country to be a freelance stylist, let alone a celebrity stylist. These days a stylist is as imperative as a hair dresser.  Also seeing designers embrace diffusion lines for such stores as Target and making leading fashion designers accessible for everyone. Last but certainly not least, the power of social media! Mind blowing.

You have styled some big celebrities. Any favourites? Any funny anecdotes?

This is hard to narrow down. I have had life changing and incredible experiences with working with the most amazing of talents. Stand outs for me would be Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hawkins and Jodi Gordon. I don’t kiss and tell though ... no anecdotes to share...

How would you describe your personal style?

Casual, masculine but sexy, less is more...except when it comes to a statement handbag and shoe.

What are the five things that every woman should have in her wardrobe?

Leather leggings, the ultimate cut blazer, quality basics, funky booties for style and practicality (All mums must haves) and the best cut jeans

What is the best fashion advice that you have to give?

Own your style, less is more, be consistent and confidence is key

How is Shopbop a resource to you as a Style Advisor?

It's a one stop shop! It works for all budgets and gives me the huge variation of brands I love and need for my clients and myself. For our Australian consumers it allows us to feel connected to our international market and constantly updated with all the world’s must haves. Plus it has a quick turnaround.

What are some of your favourite brands on Shopbop?

Where do I start!? Dion Lee, Josh Goot,  Alexander McQueen, Helmet Lang, James Perse, J Brand, Brian Atwood, Alexander Wang, Citizens of Humanity, ALC, Willow.

The one label that you would wear forever?

Helmet Lang
