Anne Hathway, London premiere of Les Miserables, December 2012
Reviews for Tom Hooper's extravagant film version of (probably) the world's greatest musical have been so far been mixed. It's a fairly unambiguous statement to label the star vehicle "musical diarrhoea". That said, there's certain to be Oscar Bait here and if anybody deserves it it's Anne Hathaway who plays the factory worker turned prostitute Fantine. To get the starved look Hathaway subsisted on two squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. Which sounds awfully un-fun. But that said, now that Hathway is newly married, basking in the glow of a potential Oscar and allowed to eat again, she looks incredible. The dramatic Givenchy dress she wore for the London premiere of Les Mis was one reserved for potential Oscar winners. Beaded, buttoned and practically backless, the bat wing sleeves and neckpiece added to the sheer spectacle of it. Brava.
