Actress Jamie Brewer has become the first person with Down Syndrome to grace a catwalk at New York Fashion Week.

The 30-year-old star of American Horror Show took part in designer Carrie Hammer's runway show yesterday, wearing a bespoke ensemble inspired by her role in the television series, the Daily Mail reported.

Before the show, Brewer told Today magazine she hoped her catwalk appearance would show other young women that they could do anything in life.

"Young girls and even young women … [see me] and say 'hey, if she can do it so can I'.

"It's a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are."

Brewer appeared as part of Hammer's Role Models Not Runway Models initiative, where the designer chooses inspirational women who actually buy her designs to model her clothes.

The list of role models include leaders of multi-billion dollar businesses, heads of global nonprofits, pioneers of cutting-edge research and people living with disabilities who are excelling in life.

"I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women and one of them happened to be a doctor and a sex therapist who happened to be in wheelchair," Hammer said.

"It was never intended to be this incredible statement."

Hammer said she made a special design just for Brewer, which she hoped captured her fabulous qualities.

"American Horror Story is dark, scary, bewitching so we had to go with black and Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line."

Brewer tweeted about her experience as a runway model throughout the night:
