The Rae Morris Makeup Brush Collection

The Rae Morris Makeup Brush Collection

The Rundown: The love child of famed Aussie makeup artist Rae Morris, it’s a 27-piece strong set of hand-made brushes that covers every product application need imaginable, from a metal mascara comb for clump-free lashes, through to a body bronzing brush. In keeping with the professional makeup artist vibe, the brushes, with their recycled bamboo handles, are designed to feel feather-light while the bristles are made from Blue Squirrel hair that apparently trumps most natural hair alternatives, (such as pony and goat), in terms of softness. The kit also comes with an easy to follow manual that includes tips on how to use each brush seven ways from Sunday.

Getting back to the Blue Squirrel hair - although the idea of natural fibres may not sit well with some users, there is a valid reason why beauty brands continue to use animal hair in expensive brush ranges. For one, natural bristles don’t tend to molt anywhere near as much as synthetic fibres, which helps the brushes to hold their shape for longer, plus - they’re nowhere near as scratchy or abrasive on the skin as nylon bristles can be.

The Verdict: Just looking at this kit is enough to make us want to quit our day jobs and enroll in beauty school.

Tickles doesn't it?

Tickles doesn't it?

Unlike most professional brushes which are labeled with strange reference numbers that don’t make any sense once they leave the manufacturing floor, the straight-forward descriptions on the handles mean you can get down to business without having to bother with the manual. Although you’d want to wear a lot of face paint in your lifetime to warrant spending $699 on a set of makeup brushes, aside from the obvious benefit of creating more defined, natural-looking makeup, they also do a stellar job at stretching out your product, so you'll easily make up for the initial outlay in the first five trips you save to beauty counter. But word on the street is that a beginner’s set, made up of Rae’s top ten brushes that will retail for around $199 is on its way, so stay tuned.
