Ask any makeup artist and they’ll tell you there’s no such thing as a one-fits all foundation. Rather than putting all your eggs in the one basket, it pays to own a wardrobe of foundation formulas that you can mix and match to suit your changing skin needs, social life and climate.

If you only add one new foundation to your repertoire this season, do your hip pocket a favour and make it one of these.

 1. L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Foundation, $33.95.

The Rundown: Just as big on hydrating as it is highlighting, it uses light reflecting technology to minimise imperfections such as uneven skin tone, for smoother, more radiant skin.

The Verdict: It’s the closest thing to a well-rested-looking glow, this side of a summer vacation. The sheerness of the formula means it glides on in next to no time, feels totally weightless on and keeps skin looking dewy and soft well into the night.

2. Revlon PhotoReady Airbrush Mousse Makeup, $34.95.

The rundown: It’s an oil-free, air-infused mousse packed with light-reflecting particles that are designed to bounce light off the skin for a flawless finish.

The verdict: There’s no denying the novel aerosol applicator makes the mundane task of applying foundation that much more enjoyable, but the unexpected semi-matte finish of the formula is where the real magic is at. Although it’s genius at downplaying pores, like most mousse and cream formulas, it doesn’t gel well with dry skin so it pays to moisturise like a bandit first.

3. Rimmel London Wake Me Up Foundation, $19.95.

The Rundown: A good all-rounder, it’s packed with SPF 15, boasts radiance-boosting pearls designed to give tired skin back its glow and peptides to keep the skin supple and hydrated.

The Verdict: The perfect pick-me-up for dry skin, the formula is so nourishing, it’s enough to send your daily moisturiser into early retirement. Like most liquid foundations, the coverage is brilliantly buildable so you can get away with applying it sans a foundation brush without it ever looking streaky.
