You don't have to live in the salon to get an enviable mane - a little upkeep can go a long way. Below are our top tips for getting the best out of your hair.

1. Side with your part
Running late? Too busy to shampoo? To boost volume in day-old hair, spritz the roots with dry shampoo and leave the powder to work its magic for two minutes before switching your part over to the opposite side. Changing sides not only reinvents your look, but it also confuses the roots so you can capitalise on the volume underneath. Try: Klorane Extra Gentle Oat Milk Dry Shampoo, $12.95.

 2.  Don’t be scissor shy
While shine serums and treatment masks do a stellar job at temporarily smoothing over brittle tips, when it comes to the crunch, nothing cures split ends like a trim. Just remember, the longer you leave it in-between cuts, the greater the damage build-up so it pays to stick with regular eight-week appointments.

Hot tip: to minimise frizz and breakages, try making the switch to a microfiber hair towel. Unlike the regular cotton type, they’re faster absorbing and don’t create anywhere near as much friction.

 3. Shine on
When it comes to reviving dull hair, adding a gloss treatment to your at-home haircare routine can be a total game changer. Perfect for all hair types, the latest variants are formulated with lightweight moisturising ingredients that work together to boost shine and smooth texture, without depositing colour. We like John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine, $19.99, which is gentle enough to use daily.

A few more effortless hair-saving tips to try….

Beat chlorine at its own game. If you’re planning on hitting the pool any time soon, always saturate your hair with fresh tap water before diving in. Just like a sponge, your hair can only absorb so much water, so soaking it first helps to minimise the intake of chlorinated water.

Resist the hot tap. Rinsing your hair with cold water seals the hair cuticle to minimise frizz and boost shine, sans product.

Move on to a mask. For extra hydration, try swapping your regular conditioner for a nourishing hair mask. Try Garnier Fructis Instant Melt-In Mask, $6.95.
