Fringe benefits

My hair is 80 per cent grey. True. I started going grey at 18 and now have to dye it every three weeks to hide the white regrowth. My ex-husband once said that if I didn’t colour my hair, I’d look like Benita Collings towards the end of her Play School presenting career (my hair is grey and frizzy, just like Benita’s). But the advantage of dyeing my hair is I can play with new colours and trends. This autumn/winter it’s is all about strong fringes and deep, rich colours. “Coppers and deep reds are increasing in popularity this winter,” comments Kelly Grant, owner of Our Place salon in Potts Point, Sydney.

Keryn Anderson, senior stylist at Mioche Hair in Melbourne’s CBD, agrees. “We’re doing lots of deep colours, from reds to dark browns, but always with subtle highlights to break it up a bit,” she says. As for styles, it’s all about the fringe this season. And nothing thin and wispy – make it blunt for maximum impact.

“Dramatic fringes give long hair an edgy look,” says Grant. “They are strong and short and curve down the face to meet the long hair. The contrast of long hair and a short, curved fringe creates drama.”

Actress Olivia Wilde went out just last month and got herself a big, thick fringe.

International celebrity hair stylist David Babaii concurs. “Dramatic fringes are going to be all the rage – experiment! Choose a style that will fit your face shape.” To pull off this look, healthy hair is essential, says Babaii. “No more overprocessed, over-peroxided hair. Bring your hair back to its former glory with a great serum or oil treatment.”

So what do our experts recommend? Grant swears by the Goldwell Colorglow IQ Deep Reflects Regenerative Hair Masque ($26). “Keeping your hair shiny is a sign of health and beauty,” she says. “Dry, frizzy hair is ageing.” Anderson loves L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil ($38, below).

“There’s no sense using beautiful salon products and a $2 shampoo,”Anderson says.

“You’re stripping out all that beautiful colour. Use a shampoo that’s designed to lock in moisture and an oil to protect it from heat styling.” And moi? My coppery-red dyed and straightened locks are loving Goldwell Colorglow Leave-In Treatment ($21). This is great to spritz on – it gives you shine and treats your hair without weighing it down.
