Fantastic without the plastic

It can be so easy to get stuck in a make-up rut, but with the right product and technique you can look (at least) five years younger. Here's how to create the effects of a little nip-tuck - zero surgery required.

• All that glitters is not gold. When it comes to blush and eye shadow, even the tiniest amount of shimmer will settle into creases to play up fine lines. Instead, stick with matte powders for the eyes and cheeks, and keep the glittery stuff for the lips.

• Stay on high ground. Wearing blush too low on the cheeks will only drag down your features. Keeping the colour concentrated along the top of the cheekbone, blending the blush so that it gradually disappears as it reaches the outer corner of the eye, will create the illusion of higher-set cheekbones.

• Lighten up dark circles. As we age, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner, causing the red and blue blood vessels underneath to appear more obvious. If the circles take on blue or purple undertones, using a peach-toned concealer will instantly warm up the skin. Or, if the area is looking sallow, try a lilac-hued product.

• Choose your colours wisely. Wearing pink or red-based products, such as gloss, lipstick or blush, can exaggerate the appearance of broken capillaries and rosacea, so take a minute or two to properly camouflage imperfections with a liquid concealer.
